PBA-DL: Cafe France, Big Chill get blowout wins

The Cafe France Bakers and the Big Chill Superchargers both got blowout wins, Thursday at the Ynares Sports Arena, as the two teams moved into the top four of the PBA Developmental League standings.

As a result, Big Chill moved up into a tie with the idle NLEX Road Warriors for first place, as both teams have similar 3-0 records. Cafe France on the other hand, improved to 2-1, good for fourth.

Cafe France, which notched their first victory on a technicality involving an ineligible player being fielded by the Fruitas Shakers, got a win on the hardcourt, with a 73-58 drubbing of Erase Xfoliant.

The Bakers, who were actually behind, 21-13 after the first quarter, held their foes to just eight points in the second quarter, and never trailed from that point on.

Come the third, Erase did make a game out of it by getting to within five, 50-45, on a Nate Matute connection. However, Cafe France rebounded with a 10-1 run in the fourth, which put them up by 15, 63-48, in the fourth. Big man Mike Parala then hit the dagger, nailing a shot from deep to make it 68-50, to put the game away.

Roger Pogoy led all scorers with 18 markers, adding 13 rebounds and five assists for an all-around effort. Mike Parala chimed in with 12 markers, while Jens Knuttel played the role of floor general to the hilt, scattering 11 points and 12 dimes.

Jett Vidal led Erase with 11 points, but he and fellow sharpshooter Nate Matute, who tallied nine points, were a combined 1-of-11 from beyond the arc, while the team was a mere 2-of-22 as a whole.

In the second game, Big Chill shut down the Cebuana Lhuillier Gems, 81-61, doubling up on their foes early, 16-8, and then never looking back.

Each quarter, the Superchargers kept increasing their lead, until they got to their final margin of victory, 20 points.

Mark Canlas scored 18 points to lead Big Chill. Arvie Bringas posted 17 points and 11 rebounds, along with two blocks, and Mac Montilla added 15 points, five rebounds and four assists. The trio more than made up for a quiet outing by Terrence Romeo, who went 5-of-15 from the field for 11 markers.

Former UE Red Warrior Paul Zamar led Cebuana with 20 points, while big man June Dizon had 16 points and nine rebounds for the Gems.

Big Chill's defense held Cebuana to 27.6 percent shooting from the field.

Erase's loss was their second of the conference, evening their card at 2-2. Cebuana on the other hand slumped to 1-2 after their second straight loss. - AMD, GMA News
