PBA: Barako Bull shake up roster, dealing with four different teams in blockbuster

(Updated, 5:22pm) The Barako Bull Energy Cola team began the new year with a new coach. They'll be headed into the Commissioner's Cup with a new roster as well. Barako Bull Energy Cola, the San Mig Coffee Mixers, the Alaska Aces, the Petron Blaze Boosters, and Barangay Ginebra San Miguel rearranged the deck chairs in a five-team deal just short of a week after the end of the PBA Philippine Cup. The complicated transaction is headlined by Petron landing Ronald Tubid, Jonas Villanueva and Allein Maliksi reinforcing Barako Bull, Alex Mallari landing with SMC, and former FEU Tamaraws Aldrech Ramos and Mac Baracael finding new homes with Alaska and Ginebra, respectively. The first part of the deal saw Petron ship Jojo Duncil and 2012 number three overall pick Alex Mallari sent to Barako Bull, in exchange for Ronald Tubid. Barako Bull then turned around and sent Mallari, along with Lester Alvarez, Leo Najorda, and Petron Blaze's 2014 first round pick to San Mig Coffee, taking back Jonas Villanueva, JC Intal and Aldrech Ramos. Like Mallari, Aldrech Ramos was then flipped to the Alaska Aces, in exchange for Mac Baracael. Barako Bull then completed things by shipping Baracael to Barangay Ginebra, in order to re-acquire Allein Maliksi. Tubid (14.9 points, 5.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 0.7 steals) gives Petron a veteran shooting guard and an above-average rebounder at the position, but it remains to be seen how he will fit alongside Chris Lutz and Joseph Yeo. Barako Bull ships out their top-scorer from last conference, but adds a second point guard in Jonas Villanueva (3.9 points, 2.6 rebounds, 2.7 assists), some scoring in the UST Growling Tigers duo of Allein Maliksi (4.2 points) and Jojo Duncil (3.8 points) who will likely see more minutes, and a capable defender in JC Intal (3.4 points, 1.6 rebounds). San Mig Coffee hands the starting point guard reins over to Mark Barroca, while snagging 2012 draft pick Lester Alvarez (3.0 points) to back him up. Adding Alex Mallari (4.3 points) and Leo Najorda (7.6 points) will also give them some weapons off the bench or for when James Yap's shot is off. Alaska gets an upgrade in their front court courtesy of Aldrech Ramos (4.6 points, 1.8 rebounds), who can help defensively in the paint and spread the floor on the other end. Mac Baracael (9.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.1 assists) will be a versatile forward for a Ginebra squad that will likely run more under their new head coach Alfrancis Chua. The 2013 Commissioner's Cup kicks off on February 8. - AMD, GMA News
