(Updated 8:26pm) Beleaguered Malaysia finished in 15th place in the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship, after dropping its classification match to Thailand, 71-56, Monday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
Malaysia, which lost all three of its Group C matches, entered the game with a -203 point differential, owing to blowout losses to Iran, Korea and China.
Thailand was similarly winless in Group D, having dropped games to Kazakhstan, Bahrain and India, but had just a -62 differential.
The Thais opened with a 22-7 first quarter, including a whopping 17-2 beginning, but Malaysia made in-roads on defense, holding their foes to just nine markers in the second canto. In fact, Thailand's first points of the quarter came at the free throw line on a split by Wacharapong Tongsri, 23-19, at the 4:45 mark, while their first field goal was a trey by Chanachon Klahan, making it 26-19 a possession later.
Undeterred, Malaysia kept up the pressure, getting to within one, 28-27, on a Hong Hoong Gan triple, 28-27, but charities by Wattana Suttisin made it a two-possession game entering the break, 31-27.
In the third, Thailand reestablished their double-digit lead, getting it to as high as 13 markers on a triple by Attaporn Lertmalaiporn, 48-35, 1:13 left in the penultimate canto. A trey by Chin Yong Wong however made sure Malaysia was still in striking distance, 48-41, with 10 minutes left to make something happen.
Early in the fourth, Tian Yuan Kuek's three-pointer towed Malaysia within four points with 8:46 still to play, 48-44, but a 17-1 Thai run put the nail in the coffin, as it dug a 20-point hole for Malaysia, 65-45, just 2:53 left in the game.
A triple by Wong got the tally to 65-50, but with just 1:12 left, it was too little, too late for Malaysia.
Anasawee Klaewnarong led four scorers in double-figures for Thailand with 16 markers on 50 percent shooting. He also added three rebounds and a steal in just 16 minutes of play.
Wattana Suttisin added 13 markers, five rebounds and two assists, Wacharapong Tongsri powered through a double-double of 12 points and 16 rebounds, while Attaporn Lertmalaiporn came off the bench for 11 points.
Malaysia drew a game-high 19 points from reserve Eng Heng Soo, but he was the only player on their side to score more than six points.
Thailand held their foes to just 29 percent shooting (18-of-62) while making 39 percent of their own attempts (22-of-56). They also clobbered their foes on the boards, 48-28 and got a 34-14 margin in points in the paint, plus a 14-3 advantage in second-chance points.
