The San Mig Coffee Mixers outlasted the struggling Air21 Express in double overtime, 83-92, on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena, to earn their first win of the 2013-14 PBA Philippine Cup.
With James Yap sitting the game out due to a hyper-extended elbow, Marc Pingris led the charge for the Mixers with 15 points, 12 boards, four assists and a block. San Mig also benefited from Asi Taulava fouling out at the start of the second extra period. That led to 2013 second overall pick Ian Sangalang scoring at will in the shaded lane without Air21's veteran big man.
"We just need a win," said San Mig coach Tim Cone. "We don't care whether its an ugly win, a beautiful win; we'll take any win."
San Mig Coffee moved up to 1-3, in a tie with the Alaska Aces, while Air21 mans the cellar with a 0-4 card.
Air21 got off to a hot start, with Vic Manuel leading the Express to a 14-0 run after a 2-2 deadlock. Mark Cardona, making his debut for Air21 following an offseason trade from the Meralco Bolts, scored on a hook shot, but PJ Simon and Rafi Reavis kept San Mig in it, 20-10. An Ian Sangalang split ended the first with Air21 still ahead, 20-11.
Baskets from Mark Barroca helped the Mixers cut the lead to two, 22-20, as Alex Mallari and Sangalang registered conversions as well. Joseph Yeo continued to score from inside and out, as Rafi Reavis strung together six straight. The Express sustained a five-point advantage at the half, 35-30.
A PJ Simon jumper, followed by a Mallari layup, cut the lead to only one at the start of the third, but eight points from Yeo, Vic Manuel and Niño Canaleta re-established a nine-point lead, 43-34.
Four more from Reavis, followed by a Val Acuña three had San Mig humming, but Canaleta converted on a layup off a Bonbon Custodio miss, 45-41. Canaleta connected anew, this time with a trey, bumping the lead to seven with 3:24 remaining. Splits from Sangalang and Pingris, followed by a layup from Barroca with 17 seconds remaining cut their deficit to three. The Express clung on to a 50-47 lead entering the fourth.
PJ Simon made the difference a solitary point to start the payoff period, but rookie Eric Camson was there to can a long two for the Express. Cardona then connected with a three, but Alex Mallari and Rafi Reavis converted to cut the lead to two anew. Air21 coach Franz Pumaren called for time to stop the San Mig momentum swing, and Cardona obliged his coach with another hook. JR Cawaling responded with a booming triple though, as Reavis split from the line tie the game at 59-all at the seven minute mark of the fourth.
Air21 continued to commit turnovers, as a San Mig steal led to a Pingris layup on the break, giving the Mixers the lead. A Barroca jumper with 5:11 remaining had San Mig ahead, 63-59, forcing the Express to call for time.

Back-to-back hits from Vic Manuel knotted up the two teams anew, but Mark Pingris got a floater through. Cardona responded with twin floaters, though, giving Air 21 a 67-65 advantage.
In the final minute, Mark Barroca drove to the lane to tie the game at 67-all, but Asi Taulava canned his first field goal soon after, 69-67. With the shot clock winding down, the Mixers went to Mallari for a drive and a fadeaway, but the sophomore point guard failed to find the mark. The ball sailed out of bounds, as the referee first called the ball for the Express. But after the instant replay, it was shown that Taulava's right knee hit the ball last, giving San Mig 7.7 seconds to tie or win the game.
After the timeout, San Mig went to Mallari anew, and the sophomore connected on a short baseline jumper to tie the game. With 4.9 seconds left, Air21 had Taulava taking a long two, but his attempt fell short to end regulation with the two teams tied at 69-all.
In the extra period, PJ Simon connected on a three, but Vic Manuel countered with a baseline jumper at the other end. A Yeo triple gave the Express a two-point lead with less than three minutes remaining, as San Mig failed to convert on extra possessions. Marc Pingris finally tied it up from the line with 1:38 to go, 76-all.
Air21 came up empty on their next possession, as Alex Mallari split from the line to give San Mig a one-point lead. The Mixers almost had another steal thanks to Barroca, but the former Gilas guard stepped on the line while trying to collar the ball. The Express had six seconds to get things done, but Yeo turned the ball over, giving San Mig the possession.
Val Acuña missed from beyond the arc, but Bonbon Custodio and Asi Taulava couldn't find the bottom of the net at the other end. With 14.9 remaining, Barroca made his first free throw but missed the next, as Reavis secured the offensive rebound leading to another San Mig possession. Mallari split as well, giving Air21 8.5 seconds to tie the game with a three.
With Yeo finding a hard time jacking up a trey, Air21 went to Canaleta, who was fouled on the way down from an attempt from three-point territory. Canaleta canned all three free throws, tying the game at 79-all with 0.3 to go. The Mixers failed to make anything out of the fraction of a second, sending the game to its second extra period.
With Taulava fouling out to start the second overtime, Mark Barroca went ahead for a quick layup to put his team ahead. On their next play, the Mixers found Sangalang for an offensive board and two more points, as Air21 struggled to find their range.
Six more points from Sangalang had San Mig up 89-81 with a minute and a half to go, as Canaleta offered a meek reply at the other end. A traveling call on Yeo led to another split from Barroca, and a final miss from the Express had San Mig cruising to victory.
Mark Barroca top-scored for his side with 19 points, in addition to five rebounds, eight assists, three steals and a block. Rafi Reavis had 15 points and 15 rebounds, Ian Sangalang compiled 14 markers, six boards and two swats, while Alex Mallari and PJ Simon combined for 28 points and 15 rebounds as the team's starting backcourt.
Joseph Yeo led all corers with 21 points, but he finished 8-of-19 from the field. He also had eight rebounds and six assists, to somewhat offset his game-high eight turnovers. KG Canaleta scored 20 points, but made just one of seven triples, Vic Manuel registered 14 points, while Mark Cardona had 13 in his Air21 debut.
Both teams shot poorly from downtown, with San Mig Coffee converting 3-of-15, while Air21 hit 6-of-29. The more telling stat though was free throw attempts. The Mixers went to the line 35 times and hit 21 charities, while Air21 was a meager 7-of-8. - AMD, GMA News
