PBA: Guiao leads Rain or Shine in walkout, but team returns to play

(Update-3, Thursday 12:32pm) Rain or Shine Elasto Painters head coach Yeng Guaio led his team in temporarily walking off the court with still 11:39 to play in the second period of game six of the 2013-14 PBA Philippine Cup Finals.

A foul called on JR Quiñahan attempting to block a shot by Marc Pingris triggered the move by the mercurial Guiao, with his team down 30-17.

A report on the TV broadcast of the game said that Guiao did the move as a sign of protest to three straight alleged bad calls.

The team had 15 minutes to get back on the court or forfeit the game, but the protest barely lasted five minutes before the Elasto Painters, along with Guiao, returned.

Rain or Shine was just assessed a warning for delay of game.

Guiao is no stranger to the tactic. Back in 2006, Guiao led Red Bull Barako in a walkout during their semifinals series against the San Miguel Beermen. The team was fined P500,000 with P100,000 charged directly to Guiao.

The last walkout occurred in 2010, by the Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters, in their quarterfinals series against Barangay Ginebra. The team was fined a whopping P1 million. Since then though, the league has increased the penalty for full walkouts to an eye-popping P10 million, a move that occurred under then-commissioner Sonny Barrios in 2010.

The difference between those two cases and this one, is that this time, the Elasto Painters returned to the court to finish the game.

As a result, Rain or Shine will only be fined P2 million, based on the 2010 ruling.

PBA Commissioner Chito Salud seemed to concur on Thursday, a day after the game, releasing a statement that said, "The rules on walkouts, partial or otherwise, are clear and we will enforce them accordingly." - AMD, GMA News
