The San Mig Coffee Mixers leaned on their big men in the endgame, shackling Barangay Ginebra San Miguel while imposing their will in the paint for a 90-80 win, Sunday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum, in the on-going PBA Commissioner's Cup.

Import James Mays led the Mixers with 29 points and 29 rebounds to lead San Mig.

"Mays, we're gonna call him Mr. Everywhere," said San Mig Coffee head coach Tim Cone. "If he's gonna play that way this conference, we're gonna be a contender."

The game was rematch between the two teams, after San Mig Coffee won a seven-game series in the semifinals of the Philippine Cup against their sister team, before going on to win the conference title.

The Mixers are the only other undefeated team, aside from the 4-0 Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters, while Ginebra fell under .500 with a 1-2 card.

Leon Rodgers and Chris Ellis carried Ginebra in the opening period, 10-6, before an eight-point swing pushed San Mig Coffee ahead. Rodgers and Ellis continued to go on a tear to tie it up at 16-all, before James Yap rang in a jumper.

Free throws from Ian Sangalang and Mark Barroca late in the period looked to give the Mixers the advantage after one, put a put-back from Japeth Aguilar had Ginebra leading heading into the second, 22-21.

Aguilar started to widen the gap, before the Barangay uncorked a 9-2 run to push the lead to seven, 34-27. San Mig Coffee responded with their own 10-3 spurt, knotting it up with a PJ Simon and-one at the 1:44 mark, 37-all. Rodgers went on to score Ginebra's last six points, though, keeping his team ahead after two, 43-41.

The Mixers found their rhythm after the break, sizzling for 13 points while limiting Ginebra to five markers from Rodgers, 54-48. LA Tenorio then led a comeback, with two of the point guard's free throws tying the game at 57-all.

In the final two and a half minutes, San Mig Coffee made their way to the lane, stringing together seven points for some breathing room, but an Aguilar banker, along with some free throws from the rookie duo of Greg Slaughter and James Forrester, cut the lead to two with one quarter to go, 69-67.

Ginebra seized the lead to start the fourth, with Caguioa and Aguilar scoring four straight, 71-69. Mays then carried the Mixers, accounting for six of his team's next eight points for a four-point lead, 79-75.

San Mig started to shackle Ginebra in the paint, while imposing their will inside. Sangalang was a willing recipient of great passes, while Mays connected through offensive boards, 89-78.

"Ian just doesn't blink. He's fearless; he doesn't play pretty but he plays effective," said Cone of his rookie big man. The San Mig mentor also praised his team's defense:

"It's real luxury having guys like Ping, Rafi [Reavis] and Alex [Mallari, tall, lanky and long defenders," Cone added. "Alex is learning a lot from Ping and Rafi and he's going to be one of the great defenders."

The two teams ushered in the final two minutes with two charities from Rodgers to end Ginebra's drought. Back-to-back misses from deep from James Yap and LA Tenorio led to a split for Mays, as Ginebra failed to mount a comeback in the final minute. - AMD, GMA News
