Boracay Rum overcame a 19-point deficit to beat Cagayan Valley, 79-69, on Monday in the PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Waves rallied from 41-22 down in the second quarter with a 27-12 explosion in the third period, to get their new campaign off to a winning note.

The third quarter run included a 7-0 finish entering the fourth for a 61-55 advantage. Roider Cabrera then hit back-to-back triples to start the final canto for Boracay’s biggest lead at 76-55.

“I’ll take it [this win],” said Boracay Rum coach Lawrence Chongson. “Kesa lumamang ng malaki at habulin kami.

“Siguro pumasok sa amin ’yung may mga bagong players kami kaya slow start. Test of character na rin na nakabalik kami,” said Chongson, whose team faces five-time champion NLEX on Thursday.

Chris Banchero led the Waves with 22 points while Rudy Lingganay, one of four new players in the line-up, had 12 markers.

Abel Galliguez converted a triple for the Rising Suns, crafting a 41-22 lead with three minutes left in the second quarter. Boracay Rum, however, closed the first half on a 12-2 tear to cut the deficit to nine points, 43-34.

“Medyo nahimay na ’yung role ng mga players especially sa defense, na-klaro nung halftime,” said Chongson.
