Now it's official: PHL new world record holder in marathon basketball

The Philippines over the weekend set a new world record for a marathon basketball, as players logged 120 hours in a game in Pasig City for the benefit of victims of super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan).

Guinness World Records officially recognized the feat by "Team Walang Iwanan" and "Team Bounceback," which started March 24 and ended March 29, dzBB radio reported Sunday.

Players and organizers posed for photos after being awarded the distinction at the Meralco Gym in Pasig City.

In the game, Team Bounceback scored 16,783 points, while Team Walang Iwanan had 16,732.

The DZBB report said the teams raised funds for Yolanda victims, with the marathoners' next move being to build a basketball village in Negros Occidental.

An earlier report on Bombo Radyo said the game lasted 120 hours, one minute and 49 seconds, or about five days after it started.

But as of 8 a.m. Sunday, the feat had yet to be posted online in the Guinness World Records website and Facebook page. - LBG, GMA News
