The Big Chill Superchargers defeated the Cagayan Valley Rising Suns, 72-66, on Monday to gain a share of the lead in the PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Superchargers bucked a slow start, coming up with a 16-0 run in the second period to gain a lead which they never relinquished.

Rodney Brondial had 12 points and 16 rebounds as he was instrumental in keeping Big Chill’s lead after a second-half comeback try by Cagayan Valley.

With the win, Big Chill improved to a 2-0 win-loss slate, joining NLEX, Café France, and Cebuana Lhuillier atop the team standings.

“I thought Rodney did a good job when Cagayan was making a run. He supplied the points and made some crucial rebounds to keep us going,” said Big Chill coach Robert Sison.

Cagayan Valley head coach Alvin Pua was ejected at the start of the fourth period after being slapped with three technical fouls for continuous complaining and using profanity.

The ejection sparked the Rising Suns as they were able to trim the deficit to one point, 45-44, on a basket by Joshua Webb.

Brondial ended Cagayan Valley’s momentum with the basket, followed by an Andrian Celada reverse lay-up, 49-45.

The Rising Suns lost for the second time in as many games.

The tournament continues on Tuesday at the Meralco Gym with Café France facing Boracay Rum at 2pm and NLEX battling Hog’s Breath Café at 4pm. - Reuben Terrado, SPIN
