GlobalPort Batang Pier will be selecting first in the 2014 PBA Draft, after winning the lottery, conducted Tuesday at the MOA Area, prior to the start of game one of the 2014 PBA Governors Cup.

The Batang Pier went 5-9 in the Philippine Cup, earning themselves a quarterfinals berth, but after replacing Coach Richie Ticzon with Pido Jarencio, the team proceeded to go 1-8 in both the Commissioner’s Cup and the Governors’ Cup.

The Meralco Bolts was the other team in the running for the top pick, but the team dealt the selection to the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters straight up in an August 2012 deal, further strengthening a team that will play in their second Finals series this season.

Rain or Shine last season also had the third overall pick via a three-team deal that ironically also involved Meralco.

GlobalPort on the other hand had three of the top 11 picks in the 2013 Draft, but wound up trading two, RR Garcia (6th overall) and Nico Salva (11th overall), in separate transactions to Barako Bull Energy Cola.

This year’s draft is slated for August 24 at the Robinson’s Midtown Manila mall. - AMD, GMA News
