Filipino basketball fans looking for live updates online for Gilas Pilipinas in the FIBA Asia Cup may have been surprised by an unfamiliar name on the national team roster — Paul John Dalistan.

But it's not a new discovery for Gilas coach Chot Reyes. Rather, that's the name listed on the passport of Rain or Shine star Paul Lee, one of the new additions to the national lineup for the tournament in Wuhan, China.

Lee was born on February 14, 1989 to Edwin Lee and Helen Dalistan, and his birth documents had him carrying his mother's surname.

His case is similar to another Gilas stalwart Jayson Castro, whose passport carries the name Jayson William, his American father's surname. During the FIBA Asia Championship last year in Manila, Castro had to play under his official name.

But like Castro, Paul Lee by any other name should still be a lethal weapon for Gilas in the FIBA Asia Cup and subsequent tournaments. He proved that on Saturday, scoring 18 points on four three-pointers to lead Gilas in his international debut against Chinese Taipei. — JST, GMA News
