San Miguel wins vs Phoenix in Gary David's debut
San Miguel relied on Tyler Wilkerson's 40 points to defeat the Phoenix Fuel Masters, 121-109, in all-star Gary David's debut with the Beermen.
Coach Leo Austria's squad's spotty shooting in the opening period allowed the Fuel Masters to zoom to a 32-22 lead in the first quarter, but the Beermen recovered to trim the deficit at the half, 55-54. It was then the Beermen's turn to sizzle in the second half, overwhelming the Fuel Masters, 67-54, to cruise to victory.
"Alam naman nating lahat kung gaano kaimportante 'tong larong ito sa amin," said Austria in the post game press conference.
"Nung first half, they scared us. They fought really hard in the first half. We have to manage how to have a good start."
San Miguel's starters did most of the damage, combining for 82 points.
Alex Cabagnot had 16 points, while Marcio Lassiter and June Mar Fajardo chipped in 14 and 12 points, respectively. Gabby Espinas and Arwind Santos also combined for 20 points off the bench, while new acquisition Gary David posted his first two points for his new team in less than two minute of playing time.
Kevin Pinkney carried Phoenix with 38 markers, while JC Intal added 14. Josh Urbiztondo was the only other Phoenix player in double figures with 10. — APG, GMA News
