NU taps Alvin Patrimonio as big man coach

National University (NU) head coach Eric Altamirano on Wednesday announced that Philippine basketball legend Alvin Patrimonio has joined the Bulldogs' coaching staff.

Patrimonio — a four-time Most Valuable Player awardee of the Philippine Basketball Association and one of the most dominant homegrown cager in his prime — will be in-charge of fortifying NU’s frontline.

“He’s [now] part of our coaching staff. He just came in and his job is really to help our bigs. We have a lot of bigs, who are really young and needs his guidance. He’s a big help,” Altamirano said at the post-match briefing following their 59-54 pre-season tournament victory against the College of Saint Benilde (CSB) Blazers.

He said it was an easy decision to bring in Patrimonio as part of the coaching staff as they played together in the national team as well as with then Purefoods (now Star Hotshots) in the PBA.

Altamirano also coached the Patrimonio-skippered Purefoods and won two championships for the franchise in the late 1990s.

“It was a collective decision and his children also plays for NU. I’ve coached him before and I know what he can do,” he said.

For the past years, NU has leaned on their dominant frontcourt presence to win games and this year they will be looking on Patrimonio of bolster the team’s performance in the shaded area.

“His leadership and his mere presence is a boost for the team and to inspire the boys,” he stated.

Patrimonio will be leading the likes of young and upcoming center Matthew Aquino and Cameroonian Alfred Aroga in their games in the collegiate cage competitions this season. — APG, GMA News
