Kia holds off Rain or Shine for first win
The Kia Picanto had enough in their tank to defeat the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, and earn their first win of the conference, 98-94, at the Cuneta Astrodome on Saturday.
Five Kia players scored in double figures, led by Rashawn McCarthy and Roider Carbrera who had 14 points each. Mark Yee chipped in 13, while Glenn Khobuntin and Eric Camson chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Picanto led by as many as seven in the final 1:50 of the game, but Ed Daquioag and Chris Tiu strung points together to trim the lead to just three with 55 ticks to go.
Daquioag then completed a steal to try to inch Rain or Shine closer, but the former UST star missed with his attempt from deep.
Chris Tiu grabbed the offensive board and earned a trip on the line, but he only managed to split to make it a two-point game, 96-94, with 21 seconds left.
Another Rashawn McCarthy turnover gave Rain or Shine a chance to tie or take the lead, but the Elasto Painters missed three straight attempts before Mark Lee secured the rebound.
Glenn Khobuntin then secured two insurance free throws, giving Kia the win.
Rey Nambatac paced Rain or Shine with 12 points, while James Yap scored 11. Jewel Ponferada and Chris Tiu tallied 10 each as starters. — DVM, GMA News
