PBA: Rain or Shine survives Alaska in OT
Reggie Johnson poured in 32 points as the Rian or Shine Elasto Painters recovered in extra time to defeat the Alaska Aces, 109-103, in the elimination round of the 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Elasto Painters were ahead 69-61 at the end of the third, before the Aces went on to deliver 33 points in the fourth period to send the game into overtime. Ten straight points from Antonio Campbell gave the Aces a 91-90 edge with 1:06 to go, before Maverick Ahanmisi and Reggie Johnson connected on back to back hits to make it a three-point game for Rain or Shine with five seconds remaining. Chris Banchero, however, nailed a last-second triple to tie the game at the end of regulation.
Chris Tiu added 18 points and six assists from Rain or Shine, while Raymond Almazan rounded up the starters in double figures with 11 markers. Maverick Ahanmisi and James Yap led the bench with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
In extra time, Rain or Shine raced to a 100-94 lead and never looked back, as the squad had an answer to ever Alaska conversion. A pair of Johnson charities sealed the deal, 109-103.
Alaska was led by import Antonio Campbell who tallied 40 big points with 20 rebounds and five assists. Cambell, however, combined for 13 turnovers with Calvin Abueva.
Abueva, meanwhile, was the only local starter in double figures with 19, while Vic Manuel led the reserves with 12 markers. Chris Banchero and Jayvee Casio were held to a combined 11 points with a 7 of 19 clip. Jeron Teng, meanwhile, only had two points from the stripe with a 0 of 5 clip from the field. —R.
