DLSU's Montalbo plays injured; says it was his duty as team captain
After being sidelined for two weeks due to a thumb fracture, DLSU Green Archers captain Kib Montalbo is back.
The La Salle senior played for almost 25 minutes, making four points and three rebounds during Saturday's game.
"I just really want to play, that's the bottom line. It's my last year and I don't want that my thumb injury will determine my season," Montalbo explained.
Despite the wishes of his loved ones, Montalbo suited-up and got some because he believed that it was his role as a captain to take that risk and help the team.
"Sabi ko kay coach, pati nga parents ko di sang-ayon na lalaro ako. Maraming di sang-ayon na lalaro ako. Pero sabi ko, I'm gonna take that risk, especially having a young team," the Archers captain emphasized.
"As you can see naman, nahirapan talaga pero we'll get there. Improvements should be made, pero I just wanna play. Kahit injury pa ako diyan, mag-dive pa rin ako. Masakit siya pero, wala e, I just want to play for La Salle."
Montalbo added that he would likely be in every game the rest of the season, injuries and all. "Tapilok, anything, ayoko man mangyari. God-willing, sa grace niya lang, nakakapaglaro ako. Pero I will play," he added.
DLSU head coach Louie Gonzalez said Montalbo was a big boost to Saturday's game, and their captain was ready to play even on the previous game. "He's ready to play talaga, since nung last game pa lang against UST. We're just waiting na ma-cover talaga nang husto ang thumb niya," Gonzalez said.
For Montalbo, facing Adamson will be their next problem. "We'll take a rest tomorrow and back to work on Monday. We'll see what's in store for us sa practice. We'll approach it one game at a time." — DVM, GMA News
