Juan Gomez de Liaño’s triple-double delivers win for UP vs. UE
A player has registered a triple-double performance in the UAAP for the first time in almost 12 years.
The Fighting Maroons' Juan Gomez de Liaño listed a stat line of 15 points, 12 rebounds, and 12 assists on Sunday to deliver UP a win against the UE Red Warriors, 94-81, at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan City.
The Diliman-based squad stormed the Warriors during the final period, making 31 points against UE's 21. The red-and-white team were three points close against UP at the end of the third quarter, 63-60, after UP made 22 against UE's 16.
UE had the lead at the end of the first half, 44-41.
Helping the younger De Liaño was big man Bright Akhuetie, who posted 28 points and 13 rebounds.
The last time a UAAP player made a triple-double performance was back in 2006 during Season 69—by another Fighting Maroon, Marvin Cruz, with 22-11-10. Former Blue Eagle LA Tenorio also listed 15-11-12 back in 2005.
Alvin Pasaol, meanwhile, led the Warriors with 30 points and nine rebounds.
With the win, UP is now tied with UST at 4-5, while UE slides to 1-8.
On Wednesday, both teams will be back on the court with UP facing FEU and UE playing against Ateneo.
