Ginebra overcomes Meralco for 2019 Governors' Cup crown

Barangay Ginebra once again proved they are the kings of the hardcourt as they beat Meralco in Game 5, 105-93, to capture the 2019 PBA Governors' Cup title on Friday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Ginebra trailed by as many as 14 points near the halfway mark of the second quarter, but the Kings rallied to wrestle the lead in the third frame with a triple from LA Tenorio, 61-60.

The team took a 70-64 cushion to the final frame, but the Bolts gained second wind to push for a 77-77 deadlock with 8:46 left.

But the Kings put their foot down and went on a 7-0 run to seize control for good, 84-77. The team then dominated until the final buzzer, with Japeth Aguilar listing 11 points in the final stretch.

Aguilar was hailed as the Finals Most Valuable Player, scoring 25 points and eight rebounds, while Brownlee made 24 points and seven boards.

Best Import of the Conference Allen Durham led Meralco with 29 points and 21 boards while Baser Amer chipped in 17 points in the losing effort.

This is Ginebra's third Governors' Cup crown in four years. Ginebra won the same title in 2016 and 2017, both against Meralco. —MGP, GMA News
