Kai Sotto 'excited' to be coached by former Laker Brian Shaw

Kai Sotto is looking forward to being coached by three-time NBA champion Brian Shaw.

The former Laker, who played with Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal in the early 2000s, has been announced as the head coach of the NBA G League select team.

Aside from Sotto, the new team includes top prospects Jalen Green, Isaiah Todd, and Daishen Nix.

"We look forward to watching these terrific young players develop their skills and grow as professionals under Brian’s leadership," said G League president Shareef Abdur-Rahim in an official release.

Shaw won two more NBA championships as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers in 2009 and 2010.

He also held coaching positions with the Indiana Pacers and the Denver Nuggets. He returned to the Lakers as associate head coach from 2016 to 2019.

"I’m excited to serve as head coach of the new NBA G League team," Shaw said. "This is a new and different challenge in my career, and I’m ready to get to work mentoring, coaching and developing the next generation of NBA stars."

Sotto confirmed last month that he was joining the G League Pathway Program, which allows high school players to play professionally and earn a salary instead of spending one year in college.

"Here, I will be playing with some of the very best and I will have even more resources and support," he said. "I am committed to work on developing my game on a much bigger stage." —MGP, GMA News
