The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) on Tuesday slapped Tab Baldwin with sanctions for the comments he made in the "Coaches Unfiltered" podcast.

According to the PBA website, the former Gilas Pilipinas head coach was fined with P75,000 and suspended for three games once the league resumes its season.

Baldwin, who is listed as a member of TNT KaTropa's coaching staff, faced a backlash after saying that the PBA's single import format is a "big mistake" and that imports were given "regulatory advantages" by the referees.

"I feel bad that has happened and that is not my intention," the Ateneo head coach said in a meeting with PBA officials on Monday.

He explained that his comments were "taken out of context" and the questions were pertaining to "what surprised me when I first came to the Philippines."

Baldwin also commented on the "tactical immaturity" of basketball coaches who are "significantly unaware of the tactical advancements and the systemic advancements of coaching systems coming out of Europe in particular."

He said PBA coaches are smart but they could be better "if they were forced to coach much more."

PBA commissioner Willie Marcial said Baldwin's comments were "uncalled for" and "detrimental to the league." —Justin Kenneth Carandang/MGP, GMA News
