SBP congratulates Thirdy Ravena for becoming the first Asian import in Japan's B.League

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) has expressed its support for Thirdy Ravena following his signing in the Japan Professional Basketball League.

The three-time UAAP Finals Most Valuable Player inked a deal with San-En NeoPhoenix for the 2020-21 season as part of Asian player quotas.

In a statement, the SBP said they are proud that a Filipino is the first ever Asian import in the B.League.

"We congratulate Thirdy Ravena for this achievement and we are one with the Filipino basketball fans in hoping he finds success there," the statement read.

Ravena skipped the PBA draft last year to explore his options as a possible import overseas.

The SBP said, however, that he has given his commitment to play for Gilas Pilipinas in international tournaments.

"We're hopeful that the San-En NeoPhoenix will make him available for the FIBA windows," the federation said.

SBP also said playing in Japan would be a "great opportunity" for Ravena to experience more of the international game.

"This is his chance to grow as a basketball player and everything he learns in Japan will be beneficial for Gilas as well," the SBP said.

"We are confident that he will represent the Philippines well with his talent and sportsmanship." —MGP, GMA News
