Chris Newsome drills game winner for Meralco against Terrafirma

Chris Newsome saved the day for the Meralco Bolts to escape Terrafirma, 95-93, in the PBA Philippine Cup elimination round on Sunday.

Trailing 93-85 with less than three minutes remaining in the fourth period, the Dyip made an 8-0 run to tie the game with 0:56 left, capped by a Juami Tiongson triple.

Tiongson and Chris Newsome both tried to deliver the win for their teams in regulation, but it was Newsome who emerged successful after making another attempt with a buzzer-beater fadeaway, sealing Meralco's sixth win in the PBA bubble.

Newsome registered 12 points for the Bolts, while Raymond Almazan logged 15 markers and 10 boards.

Tiongson and CJ Perez chipped in 21 points apiece in Terrafirma's eighth loss in the tournament.

Meralco is currently tied with Alaska at the fourth spot with a 6-4 card, and will close out their elimination round campaign against NorthPort on Wednesday.

Terrafirma (1-8) has been eliminated from playoffs contention, but will still play Ginebra on Monday and NLEX on Wednesday. — LA, GMA News
