Senate OKs bill granting Philippine citizenship to Ange Kouame on 2nd reading

The Senate on Tuesday approved on second reading the measure granting Philippine citizenship to Angelo "Ange" Kouame of the Ateneo Blue Eagles.

During its plenary session, the chamber approved House Bill 8632 in consideration of Senate Bills 1892 and 2058.

The granting of Philippine citizenship to Kouame will allow him to play for the national team for basketball as a naturalized athlete.

Senator Sonny Angara, chairman of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, filed Senate Bill 1892 as part of the country's efforts to create a national team to compete in the 2023 World Cup.

"We have seen what Kouame has accomplished as a member of the Ateneo Blue Eagles in the past three years and his game continues to develop. We have not seen the full potential of Kouame yet and his desire to continue developing his game here in the Philippines is something that is worth supporting,” he said.

“Ange has also shown a strong desire to continue living in the Philippines, which has been his home since 2016. I have no doubt he will provide an invaluable contribution to Philippine hoops for many years to come,” he added.

During the UAAP Season 82, Kouame averaged 12.5 points, 11.8 rebounds, 2.9 blocks, and 1.4 assists for the Ateneo Blue Eagles.

On Monday, the Senate also approved on second reading the measure granting Philippine citizenship to Spanish football player Bienvenido Morejon Marañon.—LDF, GMA News
