PBA temporarily suspends 2021 Philippine Cup due to Delta variant threat

The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) is temporarily suspending the ongoing 2021 Philippine Cup starting on August 4, Wednesday.

The league announced the development on Tuesday, saying it is supporting "the government’s directive in addressing the unwanted rise of COVID-19  Delta variant infections."

Meanwhile, the PBA will now await the approval of the  Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF EID) regarding its request to transfer the games to Lipa, Batangas.

Prior to the start of the season last month, several PBA teams held their training and scrimmages in Batangas under a closed-circuit format.

The decision to halt the games also came after the National Capital Region was placed under ECQ, the strictest quarantine status, from August 6 to 20.

The Philippine Cup is currently being staged at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City, which is located inside the NCR.
