UP appoints Goldwin Monteverde as new Fighting Maroons men’s basketball head coach

The University of the Philippines announced the appointment of Goldwin Monteverde as the new head coach of the UP men’s basketball team.

The Fighting Maroons made it official in a statement from the Office of the Chancellor released on Friday.

“Despite the recent pandemic measures, we have continued with our consultations with the UP community, stakeholders and supporters of the UP Men’s Basketball Team (UPMBT). We also conducted interviews of the applicants as part of the vetting process for the selection of our UPMBT Head Coach,” UP Diliman Chancellor Fidel R. Nemenzo said in the statement.

“I would like to announce that the next UPMBT Head Coach is Goldwyn Monteverde.”

Monteverde is the former coach of NU-Nazareth School in the UAAP Juniors division, leading the Bullpups to two championships. He was also briefly the coach of the NU Bulldogs seniors team before stepping down in August last year.

At UP, he will be reunited with some of his former players from the high school ranks, like Carl Tamayo, Gerry Abadiano, and Terrence Fortea.

In the same statement, they also announced that former Fighting Maroons head coach Bo Perasol will be appointed as the program director.
