Nash Racela on his exit as Blackwater mentor: 'Coaching is just one part of the equation'
Nash Racela aired his side following his surprise exit after nearly two years of service as the Blackwater head coach in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).
Racela, who was tapped to lead the Bossing back in November 2019, was removed from his post one day after Blackwater wrapped up a winless campaign in the ongoing 2021 Philippine Cup last September 18.
Racela said he understood where the team was coming from, especially after the franchise had set a new record for most consecutive losses in PBA history at 0-19 across two conferences.
But the 49-year-old tactician said he just hoped the management discussed the matter with him first before the members of the media.
"Still thankful to BW management for the opportunity the last 2 years. I understand their frustration and I'm aware they have the right to do what they think is best for their franchise," he said in a message to GMA News Online.
"Looking back though, I just hope they talked to me first before rushing to announce to the press."
Blackwater team owner Dioceldo Sy said in a separate interview that Ariel Vanguardia has been chosen as the interim head coach as they now start a rebuild following lackluster seasons.
Racela, though, stressed he and his deputies gave it their all "despite obvious limitations" they have encountered. The UAAP champion coach also said that coaching is just a part of the equation in order for a club to be successful in the league.
"I know that I, together with the staff, did our very best despite the obvious limitations that we had," he continued.
"Those who understand basketball for sure know that coaching is just one part of the equation. Player composition and management style play a major part in the success of any team, especially in our league PBA."
Nonetheless, Racela said he hopes Blackwater could find its elusive success under Vanguardia.
"I still wish them the best in the next conference and the seasons to come," he said. "I seriously hope they start turning things around under coach AV for this will really be good for the balance of the league." — LA, GMA News
