Selina Dagdag-Alas reveals being diagnosed with rare type of cancer
Selina Dagdag-Alas, PBA courtside reporter and wife of PBA player Kevin Alas, revealed on Thursday that she was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer.
In an Instagram post, Selina wrote that she was diagnosed with gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN) a month ago.
According to the website of Johns Hopkins Medicine, a gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) is "the term given to a group of rare tumors that develop during the early stages of pregnancy."
"After conception, a woman’s body prepares for pregnancy by surrounding the newly fertilized egg or embryo with a layer of cells called the trophoblast. The trophoblast helps the embryo implant itself to the uterine wall. These cells also form a large part of the tissue that make up the placenta — the organ that supplies nutrients to a developing fetus. In GTD, there are abnormal changes in the trophoblast cells that cause tumors to develop," said on the Johns Hopkins website.
Selina's diagnosis is a category of GTD.
"Cancer was my biggest fear. And to have it in my twenties was a big shock for me. But I praise the Lord that He has already made Himself known to me during this season of my life. Back then, I would’ve thought this was a cruel prognosis. I would’ve been bitter, angry, even resentful. But through His grace alone, and the gift of His word- I know better," wrote Selina.
"Some days are pretty tough, but I am blessed by the love, prayers, and encouragement of Kevin, our family, our churchmates, and our friends. Above all, I am blessed with the fellowship of Christ," she added.
Back in January, Selina shared that they had a miscarriage just months after their marriage. In the same post, she also said that she underwent a successful dilation and curettage procedure.
Praying for your recovery, Selina!
