Young Gilas Pilipinas defeats Iran to finish 7th in FIBA U16 Asian Championship


The kids are alright.

The young Gilas Pilipinas squad finished seventh overall in the FIBA U16 Asian Championship after defeating Iran, 95-87, in the classification game of the tournament held in Qatar.

While Gilas was outscored, 30-19, in the second quarter as Iran took the 48-39 advantage at the end of the first half, the Philippines turned the tables around in the third period and dropped 29 points against Iran's 15 to reclaim the lead, 68-63. The Gilas young guns eventually held on to end their campaign on a high note.

Alexander Konov had 18 points for the Philippine squad, while Caelum Harris had 15 points. Bryan Competente made 14 points, Jared Bahay added 13, while Zain Mahmood had 11 in the Gilas win.

Gilas entered the quarterfinals but lost to Australia, 109-83. The young players fell to Korea in the classification for fifth place, 88-77. Overall, the national team had three wins and three losses in the tournament.
