PBA to showcase just two conferences for Season 48 to give way to World Cup

The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) is set to feature just two conferences next year for its Season 48 in bid to support the country's hosting of the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

PBA commissioner Willie Marcial confirmed the development on Thursday, saying that one All-Filipino tournament and one import-laced tiff will complete next season's offering.

Season 48 will kick off in September 2023 after the World Cup.

Marcial added that players from the PBA, except those who will contend in the 2022 PBA Philippine Cup Finals, are cleared to be selected by Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas to suit up for the national team come the fourth window of the World Cup Qualifiers.

The nationals are currently ranked no. 4 in Group E behind New Zealand, Lebanon, and Jordan. They will face 2022 FIBA Asia Cup finalist Lebanon on August 25 on the road and Saudi Arabia on the 29th at home.

Alongside the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia will also serve as hosts of the global conclave.
