NU deals UP its first loss; UE upsets La Salle
It was a day of upsets in UAAP Season 85.
National University dealt University of the Philippines its first loss in the season as they took down the defending champs, 80-75, on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
After being tied at 66 at the end of the third period, the Bulldogs limited the Fighting Maroons to just 9 points against their 14-point output to notch their third win this season.
Omar John delivered a dagger for the Sampaloc-based squad with less than two minutes left, before Carl Tamayo made a triple to inch closer, 78-75. Free throws from Steve Nash Enriquez off a Terrence Fortea foul, though, sealed the victory for NU.
John led NU with 16 points, while Kean Baclaan had 13 points.
Zavier Lucero tallied 22 points for UP, while Tamayo's double-double performance of 17 points and 11 rebounds was spoiled in the loss.
Meanwhile, University of the East scored an upset against De La Salle University, 81-74.
Kyle Paranada led the Red Warriors with 20 points, 13 from the deciding frame alone. Nick Paranada followed suit with a career-high 18 points.
Schonny Winston led the Green Archers with 26 points, while Kevin Quiambao made 15 points.
In the first game of the day, Ateneo de Manila defeated University of Santo Tomas, 79-52, while Adamson University capped the day with a win against Far Eastern University, 76-65.
