Barangay Ginebra slays Bay Area Dragons in Game 7 for PBA Commissioner's Cup crown


Make way for the dragon slayers of Philippine basketball.

In front of a record crowd of 54,589, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel overwhelmed the Bay Area Dragons in the winner-take-all Game 7 of the Finals, 114-99, to claim the 2022 PBA Commissioner's Cup crown on Sunday at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan.

Ginebra pulled away in the second quarter and outscored the Dragons, 34-18, to end the first half at 61-39.

The dominant run for Ginebra continued as they led by as much as 28 points, 75-47, early in the third period. The Dragons trimmed its deficit to 13, 106-93, with 3:44 but Ginebra made a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 20 with 2:01 left, and eventually take home the crown.

Newly naturalized Filipino and Best Import of the Conference Justin Brownlee almost tallied a triple-double with 34 points, 12 assists, and eight rebounds. Jamie Malonzo registered 22 points and 17 rebounds, while reigning Most Valuable Player and Best Player of the Conference Scottie Thompson added 18 points, nine rebounds, and four assists. 

Christian Standhardinger, who was named as MVP of the Finals, tallied 12 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists.

Bay Area import Myles Powell scored 29 on top of seven rebounds and five assists, while Hayden Blankley had 25 points, nine rebounds, and four assists.

The title is Ginebra's 15th overall since joining the league, while this is Tim Cone's 25th championship in his PBA head coaching career.
