Magnolia routs San Miguel in PBA On Tour; NorthPort squeaks past Terrafirma
The Magnolia Timplados Hotshots cruised to a 29-point victory the San Miguel Beermen, 94-65, thanks to a huge fourth quarter run in their PBA On Tour clash on Sunday at the Ynares Arena in Pasig City.
The Hotshots entered the fourth period with a 10-point lead, before dominating the final period, 28-9, to turn the game into a blowout. This included a stretch of 14 unanswered points as they held the Beermen scoreless from around the seven-minute mark until Jeepy Faundo ended the San Miguel drought with just 1:43 remaining in the game.
James Laput led Magnolia with a game-high of 21 points on 8-for-10 shooting alongside 11 rebounds. Jerrick Ahanmisi added 13 markers, including three triples while Abu Tratter logged a double-double with 11 points and 11 boards of his own.
Calvin Abueva also scored nine points and grabbed 16 rebounds while playing a little over 19 minutes in the game.
Jericho Cruz, meanwhile, led San Miguel with 15 points while Rondey Brondial and Allyn Bulanadi also reached double figures for the Beermen with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
In the other game, the NorthPort Batang Pier eked out a 104-100 victory over the Terrafirma Dyip thanks to some late-game heroics from Arvin Tolentino.
Tolentino scored the last seven points of the Batang Pier, including the go-ahead triple, 100-99, with 1:35 remaining in the game. He followed that up with another basket that made it 102-99 inside the final minute, then iced the game with two free throws for a four-point margin with just 18 seconds left on the game clock.
Tolentino finished with 28 points and nine rebounds to lead NorthPort.
Paul Zamar added 21 markers and JM Calma contributed with 18 points and nine boards.
Juami Tiongson paced Terrafirma with 25 points while Javi Gomez di Liano added 19.
After Sunday’s games, Magnolia improved to 8-0 to continue to lead the standings while San Miguel dropped 3-7. NorthPort moved up into a three-team tie at fifth place at 4-4 while Terrafirma stalled at 3-6.
