Gilas Pilipinas Women fell short against Chinese Taipei Blue, 89-85, in their opening game in the William Jones Cup on Saturday in Taipei.
Gilas was trailing 51-40 at the end of the first half before it scored 21 points against Chinese Taipei's 18 points in the third period to inch closer and end the said frame at 69-61. Chinese Taipei eventually took the win despite the Gilas Women's late rally in the final frame.
Janine Pontejos led the nationals with 19 points, while Kacey dela Rosa posted 17 points and 10 rebounds. Jack Animam and Jaz Joson chipped in 13 points apiece while Afril Bernardino had 10 points in the Philippines' opening game.
The national team will return to action on Sunday when they play Iran.
