Rui Hachimura out for Olympics due to calf injury

The Japan men's basketball team will have one of its stars unavailable for the rest of its campaign at the 2024 Paris Olympics as Rui Hachimura sustained a calf injury.

In a statement, the Japan Basketball Association said Hachimura felt pain in his calf after their match against France.

"After undergoing an MRI scan on-site, [he] was diagnosed with an injury to the left gastrocnemius muscle. Due to this diagnosis, Hachimura will be leaving the team," the translated statement read.

Hachimura posted 24 points in the 94-90 overtime loss against France.

The Lakers star also encouraged Japan fans to continue supporting the team.

"I think that together with my teammates, we played a very good game for Japanese basketball. I am proud to have been able to play as a member of AKATSUKI JAPAN. The Japanese national team will continue to fight to win the match against Brazil, so please continue to support AKATSUKI JAPAN," he said in a statement.

Japan will play Brazil on Friday afternoon.
