Can Gilas Pilipinas still advance to the FIBA Asia Cup quarterfinals?

Gilas Pilipinas now holds a 0-2 record in the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup after suffering back-to-back losses to Chinese Taipei and New Zealand.

With just one game left in the group stage, which is against Iraq on Saturday, can the Philippines still advance to the quarterfinals?

Here’s how the path looks for Gilas:

Current Standings

TEAM STANDINGS
Chinese Taipei 2-0
New Zealand 2-0
Philippines 0-2
Iraq 0-2

Only the top team in each group gets an automatic spot in the quarterfinals. This means the winner of the upcoming match between Chinese Taipei and New Zealand on Saturday will secure the top spot in Group D and advance directly to the final eight.

Qualification for quarterfinals

Teams that finish second and third in each group will still have a shot at the quarterfinals via a playoff round.

The no. 2 team in Group D will face the no. 3 team from Group C, while the third-ranked team in Group D will face the second-ranked team from Group C.

What Gilas Needs to Do

To stay alive in the tournament, Gilas Pilipinas must beat Iraq on Saturday to get the no. 3 spot. A loss would eliminate Gilas from contention, finishing at 0-3.

Possible Playoff Opponents

Group C includes China, Jordan, India, and Saudi Arabia. China leads now with two wins, while Saudi Arabia and Jordan has one win each. India, meanwhile, is at 0-2.

Potential Quarterfinal Opponents

If Gilas wins the playoff and advances to the quarterfinals, it will face the top team from Group A.

As of now, Australia and Lebanon both have one win, while both Qatar and South Korea are at 0-1.
