What's next for Gilas Pilipinas after the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup?
Gilas Pilipinas wrapped up its campaign in the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup after falling to Australia, 84–60, in the quarterfinals on Wednesday in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The Philippines ended the tournament with two wins and three losses, showing improvement by finishing in the top eight, compared to a ninth-place finish in the 2022 edition.
When will Gilas Pilipinas see action again?
The Philippines will next compete in the 2027 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers, with the first window happening in November 2025.
Gilas Pilipinas is grouped with Australia, New Zealand, and Guam in the qualifiers.
The Philippines will take on Guam first, on November 28 and December 1, before heading to New Zealand and Australia for the second window on February and March 2026.
Head coach Tim Cone, however, said he is focusing on the continued growth and chemistry of the team and expressed hope that the recovering Kai Sotto will be available soon.
"You know, we put this team together for the long term and [are] trying to get them to grow together and get better. If we're going to just go ahead and change personnel, then we're all back to zero again. So, you know, we're going to use this and try to make some adjustments," Cone said after the loss to Australia.
"The big missing piece for us is Kai Sotto and hopefully we get Kai and that makes us a little bit more competitive."
"But at this point, it's really too early to look, you know, and say, well, this is what we need at this point. We got to really digest this. We got to look at [the] video. We got to see what's going on and go forward."
