Gilas Pilipinas falls to Australia in FIBA World Cup Asian Qualfiiers

Gilas Pilipinas fell to Australia, 93-66, in the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Filipinos kept the contest within striking distance in the first half, trailing just 38-33 at the break.

Australia, however, pulled away in the third quarter, erupting for 30 points while limiting Gilas to 20 to create a comfortable cushion.

The Boomers maintained control in the final period, stretching their lead to as much as 29 points, 88–59, with just under three minutes remaining, and held off the Philippines to seal the victory.

With the loss, Gilas Pilipinas closed the window with a 0–2 record after also bowing to the New Zealand men's national basketball team last Thursday.

Despite the setback, both Australia and Gilas have already secured spots in the next round, as Guam men's national basketball team dropped to 0-4 in the standings.

Justin Brownlee tallied 20 points, eight rebounds, and two assists, while Quentin Millora-Brown added 11 points and seven rebounds to lead Gilas Pilipinas.

For Australia, Elijah Pepper poured in 28 points to go along with seven rebounds and two assists, while Tanner Krebs contributed 18 points and four rebounds.

The Philippines now holds a 2–2 record in the group stage, while Australia remains unbeaten at 4–0.
