Gilas Pilipinas Women fall to Germany in FIBA Women’s World Cup Qualifiers
Gilas Pilipinas Women absorbed a 113-80 loss to Germany in the FIBA Women’s World Cup Qualifying Tournament on Friday (Philippine time) in France.
The Philippines kept pace early against the world No. 12 Germans but trailed 68-48 at halftime.
Germany began to pull away in the second half and stretched the lead to as many as 32 points, 101-69, early in the fourth quarter after back-to-back baskets from Frieda Bühner and Britta Daub.
Sumayah Sugapong paced Gilas Pilipinas with 21 points, while Afril Bernardino and Janine Pontejos chipped in 13 and 11 points, respectively, as the Philippines dropped to 0-2 in the tournament.
Emily Bessoir powered Germany with 25 points and 13 rebounds, while Bühner added 19 points.
Gilas Pilipinas will next face Nigeria, South Korea, and Colombia as it continues its bid for a spot in the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup set in Germany this September.
Germany, as host nation, and Nigeria, as reigning FIBA Women’s AfroBasket champions, have already secured automatic qualification for the World Cup.
