Dwight Howard retires from basketball: “It’s time to move on from Superman”
Dwight Howard is officially retiring from basketball.
Howard made the announcement on Friday (Philippine time) as he shifts his focus to his family and giving back to communities.
“Woke up today on the 12th of this month and I figured it’s time to move on from Superman,” Howard wrote on his social media account. “I’m no super human… I cry! I struggle! I feel like everyone else. Through the lies, the media and the hate I still show love and smile through the storm.”
“But now I’m taking off the cape and retiring from all basketball to pour into my family and give back to communities worldwide.”
Howard said he will now pass on his duty in the sport to the next generation of players.
“I know some of you might think I thought he already ‘retired’ but I didn’t… the game retired me! I still had more left to give! Yeah I did play professionally for 20 years and I’m grateful to be able to say that but I can’t lie, seeing these other players still going at it at age 40 inspired me to want to keep trying, but now I believe my duty will be to pass it down to the next generation,” he said.
He then thanked those who supported him in his career and even those who doubted him.
“Also thank you to the Naysayers, the haters, the snakes, and people that came into my life to try to destroy me. Because every time y’all did… it only made me stronger,” he said.
Howard is an NBA champion with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020 and was an eight-time NBA All-Star and three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year.
A Basketball Hall of Fame member inducted in 2025, Howard was also part of the USA team which won the gold medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
After playing almost 18 years in the NBA, he brought his talents to Taiwan, where he played for the Taoyuan Leopards. He also played for the Philippine-based team Strong Group Athletics in the Dubai International Basketball Championship in 2024.
