UAAP vows accountability, possible sanctions as probes into Baterbonia, Adili deaths continue
The UAAP reiterated its commitment to truth and accountability while also vowing to impose possible sanctions pending the investigation into the deaths of Ateneo de Manila University's Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili.
In a statement, the league said it continues to monitor and follow the probe into the fatal deaths of the two Blue Eagles last Monday, June 8, during a team building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora.
Part of its ongoing cooperation is taking into account the findings of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), the Philippine National Police–Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG), the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), and Ateneo.
According to the league, it is carefully monitoring developments and reviewing information as it becomes available.
Once investigations are completed, the findings will be presented to the seven other member schools for what it described as a full and fair review.
The UAAP also underscored several measures it intends to pursue after the investigations conclude.
Among these is the enforcement of sanctions should evidence show that established protocols, laws, or regulations were violated. The league also stressed that any disciplinary action would be carried out through due process and in accordance with existing governance procedures.
The league added it would review and, if necessary, revise its existing rules and policies to further strengthen accountability and ensure the highest standards of student-athlete welfare and safety.
"As the UAAP continues to mourn the untimely passing of Ateneo de Manila University student-athletes Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili on June 8, 2026, in Dipaculao, Aurora, the League again extends its heartfelt condolences to their families, loved ones, teammates, coaches, and the entire Ateneo community," UAAP said in a statement on Sunday.
"This difficult moment has reminded us that the care and protection of our student-athletes are paramount. Together, we remain committed to fostering a sporting environment grounded in safety, respect, accountability, and genuine concern for the well-being of every member of the UAAP community."
UAAP executive director Rebo Saguisag previously said the league would “go where the evidence leads” in its handling of the case. Ateneo, meanwhile, launched its own investigation, with Blue Eagles head coach Tab Baldwin and team manager Epok Quimpo going on leave to ensure the integrity of the inquiry.
