MPBL revokes Iloilo's franchise status for abandonment of obligations
The Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) has officially revoked the franchise of Iloilo, saying the club abandoned its obligations and participation in the league.
The league imposed the sanction on Tuesday after Iloilo forfeited its game against Negros on Wednesday, June 17 while also remaining non-committal on its upcoming match against Pasig on Wednesday, June 24.
With the franchise revocation, all of Iloilo's previous games will be voided. The United Royals were sitting at 13th spot in the South Division with a 2-12 win-loss record.
"The Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) has determined that the management of the lloilo franchise has abandoned its obligations and participation in the League in clear violation of its franchise agreement and League rules and regulations," MPBL said in a statement.
"As a result, the Iloilo franchise has been revoked, and its officers have been permanently banned from the MPBL and are subject to appropriate sanctions and penalties, including but not limited to the indefinite suspension of all league privileges and the enforcement of their outstanding obligations."
The MPBL also said it may launch an investigation into the Iloilo franchise's owners, managers, coaches, staff, and players over potential game manipulation and any outstanding financial obligations.
"The MPBL remains committed to protecting the integrity of the League, the interests of its stakeholders, partners, and sponsors, and the welfare of its teams, players, partners, and fans."
Some of notable players in Iloilo's roster include Kyt Jimenez, Ryan Reyes, Vic Manuel, and Jorey Napoles.
