Rene Baterbonia’s mother continues to seek justice a month after son’s death

Rene Baterbonia’s mother, Rovelyn, continued her call for justice a month after her son’s death.

Rene, along with Ateneo de Manila University teammate Divine Adili, died by drowning during the Blue Eagles’ team-building activity in Aurora on June 8.

“1 month na nang anak ko ngayon mula nang napatay siya, wala pa rin justice,” Rovelyn wrote in a Facebook post.

“Sana naman mabigyan na. Nanawagan po ako sa inyo lahat ‘wag ninyong lokohin ang sarili n’yo, may Panginoon tayo na gabayan kayo para magsabi kayo ng totoo k[u]ng ano talaga ang ikamatay ng anak ko.”

Different government agencies, as well as Ateneo de Manila University, have conducted separate investigations into the incident.

The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group has submitted to the Department of Justice its recommendation to file complaints for alleged violations of the Anti-Hazing Act against 11 individuals, including former Blue Eagles head coach Tab Baldwin. It also recommended filing homicide and reckless imprudence resulting in homicide charges against Baldwin and eight others.

Ateneo, meanwhile, recently reiterated its commitment to support the Baterbonia and Adili families, and those involved in legal proceedings, and to pursue the truth regarding the incident.

Meanwhile, the local government of Talacogon, Agusan del Sur, has coordinated with Rene’s family regarding his 40th-day remembrance.
