Gilas Boys’ Joaquin Tovera joins De La Salle Green Archers

After a brief offseason stint with the University of the Philippines, rising guard Joaquin Tovera found a new home at Taft as he committed to play for the De La Salle University for his collegiate journey.

The 18-year-old Tovera, who played for UP in the FilOil EcoOil Preseason Cup, will be available to suit up for the Green Archers starting in UAAP Season 89.

"At the end of the day, family was the biggest reason behind my decision," Tovera said. "I've always been closest to the people who have supported me since day one, and knowing I'll be in an environment where I can be near them gives me a lot of peace and confidence. That support system means everything to me, and I believe it will help me become a better player and an even better person."

Tovera was referring to the Cortez family, which he has a deep connection with after having played with Mikey Cortez during their time with Tumakbo Basketball. Tovera's uncle, Gregg Rivera, is also the cousin of La Salle legend and former PBA star Mike Cortez.

Tovera will now be part of a lethal backcourt that includes Jacob Cortez as they look to defend the crown.

"I'm really excited to join De La Salle University and become part of such a proud basketball program," Tovera said.

"I'm looking forward to learning from the coaches, competing with my new teammates, and doing everything I can to help us succeed. I can't wait to get to work."

Tovera is coming off a stellar run with the Gilas Pilipinas Youth. The national team ruled the FIBA U18 Asia Cup SEABA Qualifiers just last month, where Tovera was named MVP for leading the Filipinos.
