Former San Beda star JV Gallego passes away at 28
Former San Beda University guard and Gilas Pilipinas Youth member JV Gallego passed away on Saturday. He was 28.
His talent agency, VP Global Management, announced his untimely passing on Saturday.
"It is with deep sadness that VP Global Management mourns the passing of our talent, JV Gallego," the agency said.
"Beyond the basketball court, JV will be remembered for the life he lived, the people he touched, and the legacy he leaves behind."
"Our heartfelt condolences and prayers go out to his family, friends, teammates, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him."
The Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League also remembered Gallego.
Gallego was a product of Chiang Kai Shek back in high school and was part of the national team that saw action in the 2016 FIBA Asia U18 Championship, where he played alongside future PBA players Gian Mamuyac, JB Bahio, and Fran Yu.
In the collegiate ranks, Gallego suited up for National University in Seasons 81 and 82 under head coach Jamike Jarin before deciding to transfer to NCAA to play for San Beda.
He played sparingly for the Red Lions but was a key cog under head coach Yuri Escueta's program, especially during their Season 99 title run.
Tributes poured in for Gallego following news of his passing, with Fran Yu sharing a heartfelt message for the former teammate he considered a brother both on and off the court.
"Thank you for being an incredible person, a great teammate, and a true friend from the very beginning. Thank you for every memory, every laugh, and every moment we shared on and off the court," Yu said.
"Your kindness, heart, and presence made a difference to all of us. You’ll always be remembered, and you’ll forever be a part of our team and our family."
