PBA: Blackwater stuns Phoenix behind fourth-quarter storm
Blackwater flipped the switch in the payoff period to hack out a crucial 106-100 victory over Phoenix and snap its skid in the PBA Season 50 Governors' Cup on Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Bossing unleashed a wild fourth quarter behind 29 points, including an 11-0 run led by RK Ilagan, Sedrick Barefield, and Troy Mallillim, while limiting the Fuel Masters to just 14 as they turned things around for good and snapped a three-game slide for a 3-3 card.
Kentrell Barkley led the offense for Blackwater with 34 points laced with 16 rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and a steal while Barefield tallied 26 markers, three boards, and three dimes to avenge their first-round loss to Phoenix.
Ilagan chipped in 15 points, highlighted by a huge triple that instigated that huge fourth-quarter storm, while also grabbing six rebounds.
"They never stopped playing. Credit to the bench players that I had to pull out like Jed Mendoza, Troy Mallillin, Jack Dumont. Everybody helped out," Blackwater head coach Patrick Aquino said.
"We contained them. We played good defense. I love what Sed has been doing, he's being the leader of the team so he took over and credit to coach Charles. They never give up also."
While Blackwater owned the final period, it was Phoenix who took over in the third period with import BJ Johnson sinking a layup that sent the Fuel Masters to an 83-68 cushion late in the frame.
A triple and a four-point shot from Barkley cut Blackwater's deficit to seven, 77-84, but Phoenix was still able to carry an 86-77 advantage into the fourth.
Barefield, though, stepped on the gas pedal and single-handedly torched Phoenix by scoring nine points as part of a 15-2 run to open the fourth as they regained a 92-88 lead.
Phoenix once again got the upper hand when Jason Perkins sank a jumper and Ricci Rivero completed a three-point play, 93-92.
But the Fuel Masters suddenly lost steam as Blackwater responded with a pivotal 11-0 rampage sparked by a massive three-pointer from Ilagan and capped by a pair of free throws from Mallillin, 103-93.
Barkley sank three straight freebies to close it out and complete the payback against Phoenix, which dealt them a 102-93 loss during their first-round meeting.
