Remy Martin to finally represent PH with Strong Group, talks Gilas dream

Representing the Philippines has always been a lifelong dream for Remy Martin.

That dream moved one step closer to reality when the Filipino-American guard received the call to join Strong Group Pilipinas for the 2026 William Jones Cup.

"First, I'm just happy to be in the Philippines. This feels like home," Martin said.

"I have my family in Tarlac. I come here almost every year and get to actually play and represent the country that I've been waiting for since high school. It's been a dream come true for me. I'm always grateful to play basketball, but it makes it so much special now because I get to play in the Philippines," Martin said.

Martin had been waiting for the chance to play for the country internationally, but passport and FIBA eligibility rules previously kept him from doing so to join the national team.

Now, the opportunity has finally arrived — with Strong Group Athletics.

"I think it was just perfect timing. I think like Coach Charles [Tiu] and SGA, we talked at a perfect time in my career. I've been representing the Philippines since I was... That's all I know. So I'm happy that I'm here and I'm here to do that."

While the Jones Cup gives Martin his first taste of international basketball for the Philippines, he still continues to dream of donning the Gilas Pilipinas uniform one day.

"I hope that one day Gilas gives me the opportunity because that is my dream come true. That is bigger than making it to the NBA for me. I've been watching them since I was young and always wanted to be on that type of platform and I hope the country and FIBA sees that."

When asked about his Philippine passport, Martin said he obtained it later despite already being a dual citizen before turning 16.

"I got it a little later. I don't know the exact age, but I've had it for a while now. I just know I was a dual citizen before 16, so I just didn't get my passport, but I was already dual."

For now, Martin is simply grateful to finally represent the country he has long considered home.
