Underdog Boxing: Giovani Segura health update

Immediately after losing to Brian Viloria last Sunday afternoon, Giovani Segura was rushed to The Medical City in Ortigas to treat the hematoma he suffered during the match. The lump looked grotesque during the fight but it looked a lot worse immediately after the match. Viloria retained his World Boxing Organization flyweight belt via technical knockout over Mexican fighter Segura in their match Sunday at Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City. Segura complained of tremendous pain in the area so he was given painkillers and an ice pack to help bring down the swelling. An ophthalmologist, a neurologist, a surgeon, and an ENT doctor all took their turns checking on Segura to ensure that all bases are covered. He also underwent a CT scan to and had an X-ray taken to check on the damage around his eye. The doctors said that there was a small fracture in Segura’s orbital floor, which was largely caused by Viloria’s repeated left hooks. The injury is similar to what Antonio Margarito suffered against Manny Pacquiao but in a much smaller scale. In fact, the doctors think that it might not need surgery at all. They will wait for the swelling to subside then move on from there. He was not allowed to eat and drink immediately after the fight so he’ll be relying on IV fluid to keep his body hydrated. Segura was supposed to leave the country Monday but he is obviously not in any shape to travel. The initial estimate is that Segura will spend three to four days at the hospital for further testing. The members of his entourage decided that they will all stay in the Philippines to by Segura’s side. The doctors said that he is not in any kind of danger. The biggest issue is clearly the fracture but the doctors are confident that it will not end his boxing career. As of the moment, there is no timetable for his return. - OMG, GMA News
