"Hurricane" Julaton breezes past Mexican Segura via decision

Ana Julaton proved that she was the only "Hurricane" in the featherweight division, reducing Yolanda "Huracan de Yucatan" Segura to a mild breeze and winning a one-sided 10-round decision at the Polifuncional de la Colonia Francisco Villa Oriente in Kanasin, Yucatán, Mexico.   The 31-year-old Julaton (11-3-1, 1 knockout) of Daly City, California rarely had to use more than her left jab to dissuade Segura (8-4, 7 KOs) of Tampico, Mexico from initiating any offense.   The fight became more one-sided as the rounds progressed, and by the fifth Julaton was landing at will with uppercuts and body shots that took the fight out of Segura.   Segura, who had beaten eight opponents with a combined record of just 0-1, came in four pounds over the contracted weight of 126 lbs but was never able to use her size advantage to meaningful effect.   Julaton bounced back from her decision loss to Yesica Patricia Marcos in Argentina last March, where she lost the World Boxing Organization (WBO) female super bantamweight title in her third defense.   Julaton has been campaigning to challenge newly-crowned World Boxing Association (WBA) super bantamweight champion Jackie Nava (26-4-3, 11 KOs) of Tijuana, Mexico, who may fight next on the undercard of Juan Manuel Marquez's scheduled July 14 bout at the Cowboy Stadium in Arlington, Texas.   Nava will make her first title defense on Saturday night against Diana Ayala in Mexico.   "That' s the type of fight that would get women's boxing the spotlight it needs," Julaton told BoxingScene's Ryan Maquinana prior to the Segura fight. "Philippines versus Mexico has always been a great rivalry for the fans, so why not on the undercard for July 14?"   The Julaton versus Segura fight will be aired at a later date by GMA Network. — JVP, GMA News Ryan Songalia is a member of the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) and contributes to GMANews.TV and the Filipino Reporter newspaper.
