Roach on Pacquiao's bout with Bradley: 'If he looks bad, he retires'

ESPN.com reports that any chance of a Manny Pacquiao versus Floyd Mayweather Jr. battle would depend on how Pacquiao performs on June 9 (June 10, PHL time) against Timothy Bradley, with his trainer Freddie Roach saying that he would encourage his protege to retire "if he looks bad." "Bradley's no killer, but he tries hard," Roach said in an interview with the Associated Press. "Manny should eat him up as he comes forward. I think Manny should look really good in this fight. "[But] if he [Pacquiao] looks bad, he retires. At least I'll tell him to. And he may be the first one who will listen to me." Roach's words come a few days after Pacquiao said that he was shooting for a dominant outing against Bradley, telling reporters, "Everybody knows my last fight was very close." The eight-division world champion won a controversial majority decision against Juan Manuel Marquez last November, 116-112, 115-113, 114-114, and he hopes that a decisive win will help erase the memories of that narrow win. While Pacquiao's WBO welterweight title is on the line against the unbeaten Bradley, a poor outing, especially a surprise loss, could also give Mayweather an out against fighting the Sarangani congressman. On the other hand, a powerful showing will only increase the pressure for Mayweather to finally agree to more favorable terms to set-up what is currently the most wished-for battle in boxing. However, Pacquiao has said in interviews that it is not a must for him to face Mayweather. The eight-division world champion told HBO Sports that he was "very satisfied" with his in-ring accomplishments, and that his unmet career goals were more related to his other occupation as a legislator. A more spiritual Pacquiao has become closer to his family in recent months and the change has served to rid him of the pre-fight distractions that supposedly plagued him before last November's bout against Juan Manuel Marquez. Last March, Pacquiao told a local radio station that God appeared to him in a dream, asking him to retire soon, saying, "I will not stay long in boxing because He said: 'You have done enough. You have made yourself famous but this is harmful.'" - AMD/RSJ, GMA News
