The One: Mayweather versus Alvarez round by round updates

Round-by-round updates on the WBC and WBA light middleweight title fight between Floyd Mayweather and Saul Alvarez and the WBC and WBA lightwelterweight championship fight between Lucas Matthysse.


MAYWEATHER VERSUS ALVAREZ

The Mexican national anthem is sang first. Alvarez is wearing red and green gloves to represent his country. The Star Spangled Banner is performed next. Charles Barkley, Denzel Washington, Don Cheadle, Magic Johnson, Shane Mosley, Wayne Gretzky, Michael Phelps, P. Diddy, and LL Cool J are all in the house.

Saul Alvarez makes his way to the ring with the crowd singing his walk-in song.

Lil Wayne walks in to perform Floyd Mayweather's tune. Boxing's number one attraction is wearing blue with snakeskin accents.

The principals are introduced. Bell rings for the first round of the most anticipated fight this year.


Round 1

Alvarez looks so much bigger than Mayweather. The two fighters are measuring each other up. Mayweather is going in and out. Alvarez is trying to catch him with a right. Mayweather pops Alvarez with a nice jab.

Round 2

Alvarez is trying to establish his jab in the second round. He hits Mayweather with a one-two, the latter a body punch. Alvarez is throwing 1-2s and 1-1-2s. but the straight always goes to the body.

Round 3

Nothing landed from both fighters in the first minute. Alvarez finally breaks through with a left uppercut. Mayweather lands a one-two but Alvarez lands a stiff jab. The Mexican caught Mayweather on the ropes for a three-punch combo. Mayweather ends the round with his own combo.

Round 4

Mayweather with his patented shoulder roll on full display. He slaps Alvarez with a right. Alvarez lands a low blow that hurts Mayweather. The American finally finds his range as he peppers Alvarez with combinations. Mayweather's movement is much better in this round.

Round 5

Alvarez opens the round with a combination but Mayweather checks him with a right. Alvarez is investing with body shots but Mayweather's jab is landing more and more. Mayweather lands a sweeping left hook.

Round 6

Alvarez is attacking wildly. The fighters clinch and Alvarez shoulders Mayweather for another warning. Mayweather's hand speed is still the difference. Mayweather is dictating the tempo. He is landing almost all of the punches that he throws. Alvarez can't find a hole in Mayweather's defense.

Round 7

Mayweather still landing nice jabs. Alvarez lands a jab and a straight to the body. Mayweather lands a pretty right uppercut after two jabs. Mayweather's confidence is sky-high. His gloves are down by his waist as he thinks Alvarez can't not hit him.

Round 8

Alvarez opening up to start the round but he's having a hard time catching Mayweather. All basic stuff from Mayweather: jabs, one-twos, check hooks. Nothing fancy but completely effective, Alvarez caught Mayweather on the ropes but Mayweather slaps him with a right.

Round 9

Same story for this round. Alvarez trying to hit Mayweather but the American is just too good on defense. Mayweather lands a perfect overhand right on the button. Alvarez can't get through the shoulder roll. He also can't defend Mayweather's right coming from that position.

Round 10

Alvarez is sticking to his game plan but it isn't working. He needs to take more chances but Mayweather is just too elusive. Mayweather catches Alvarez on the ropes. The Mexican is starting to fade. Alvarez lands a good right followed by a four-punch combo. The fighters have a stare down at the end of the round.

Round 11

Alvarez needs to do something drastic but nothing is working for him. Mayweather is slapping him around with rights and lefts without a reply from the Mexican. Alvarez is doing his best to corner Mayweather but he just can't land anything substantial. He is swinging wildly out of frustration while Mayweather is busy piling on the points.

Mayweather is just too good for Alvarez. The young Alvarez is good in his own right but he does not belong in the same ring with Mayweather.

GARCIA VERSUS MATTHYSSE

Danny Garcia is the defending WBA and WBC light welterweight champion. He is undefeated in 26 fights with 16 knockouts. Lucas Matthysse, the challenger, holds a record of 34 wins against only two losses. 32 of his wins came by knockout.


Matthysse and Garcia have both made their way into the ring. The supporting main event is about to start. Tony Weeks is the referee.


Round 1

Both fighters trying to measure their jabs in the first minutes of the fight. Garcia lands a nice jab to the body but Matthysse counters with a right to the body. He was then warned to keep it up. Garcia lands a nice left hook to the head but Matthysse counters with the same punch.

Matthysse lands a quick left hook that catches Garcia's attention. The challenger follows up with a right to the body. Garcia lands a nice short left uppercut and right straight but Matthysse is winning the round because of his activity.

Garcia lands a big right. The champion is more confident in this round. He is keeping Matthysse away with clean jabs.

Garcia's advantage in hand speed is starting to show. He's putting punches together while Matthysse is still trying to load up and land bombs. Garcia throws a four punch combo. He lands a nice right to the challenger's body. Garcia has established the correct distance. He was able to throw his punches while effectively evading Matthysse's power punches.

The fighters bump heads early in the round. Matthysse took most of the impact but it didn't cause a cut. Garcia threw a low blow and is warned by the referee. The champ still putting his punches together. His double jabs are on the money. Matthysse landed a couple of big rights to end the round.

The action slowed down in the sixth round for Garcia. Matthysse now boring in and landing on the inside.

Garcia pops a nice jab on Matthyse's face to start the round. Matthysse threw a walloping right hand that grazed Garcia's jaw. The challenger landed an overhand right but the champion counters with a short left uppercut. There is now a slight swelling under Matthysse's right eye. Garcia lands a nice two punch combination to end the round.

The two fighters exchange left hooks. The fight is turning into a brawl as Matthysse's right eye looks like it's swollen shut because of Garcia's jabs and left hooks. Garcia landed a right straight and a left hook to end the round

The doctor steps in to check Matthysse's eye. Fight continues. Garcia is hitting Matthysse at will. The challenger can't do anything but load up on his punches and hope something hurts Garcia. The champ threw a big right but it was partially blocked.

Matthysse changes his approach. He's now putting combinations together. He gets through with a one-two. Matthysse lands a right but he eats a left counter from Garcia right on his swollen eye. Matthysse swung for the fences with a left hook but he hit nothing but air causing him to lose his balance and fall.

Matthysse starts the round by hurting Garcia but the champ gets a break as he lost his mouthpiece. Garcia is now on his backfoot, trying to maintain his distance with jabs. Garcia catches Matthysse on the ropes and knocks him down with a three-punch combination.

Knowing he has a big lead, Garcia is trying to keep the 12th round pace as slow as possible. Garcia is throwing punches from outside, staying away from Matthysse's power. Garcia turns it on by throwing beautiful combinations. Matthysse's gets floored with a low blow. One point was deducted from him. The two fighters traded combinations to finish the fight.
